Misal pav is one of the most sought-after Mumbai street food that consists of misal made up of usual (sprouts curry), topped with tomatoes, onions, farsan (fried savoury mixture), coriander, and lemon juice while served with pav. But you do not need to go to the food carts every time for having this spicy and lip-smacking dish as we are here to provide you with the misal pav recipe that you can easily try at home and enjoy the taste anytime you want.

There are two more famous misals other than the Maharashtrian misal pav recipe. They are Puneri misal (Pune version) and Kolhapuri misal (Kolhapuri version). But right now, we are going to talk about the Maharashtrian misal recipe. 

Let us discuss the recipe in detail, starting from the preparation of misal.

  • Two cups of moth bean sprouts

  • Four large or medium-sized chopped onions

  • Potatoes (two)

  • Tamarind

  • Spices: 
    One teaspoon of-  mustard seed, cumin seed, coriander powder, cumin powder, goda masala, sugar (optional)

  • Half-teaspoon of- turmeric and red chilli powder

  • Oil ( 3 tablespoons)

  • Coriander leaves

  • Steps Of The Misal Recipe
  • You need to rinse moth bean sprouts under the fresh running water for the misal pav recipe.
  • After washing it properly, drain out the extra amount of water present in the sprouts, and place them in a pressure cooker.
  • Chop two potatoes and add them to the sprouts with one-fourth teaspoon turmeric powder and salt.
  • Add an adequate amount of water covering the moth bean sprouts and the potatoes by half-inch above.
  • Pressure cook it under medium flame for 2 to 3 whistles.
  • On the other side, soak the tamarind in half-cup of warm or hot water for 30 minutes max and then extract the pulp on squeezing the tamarind.
  • In a separate pan, heat oil and add the mustard seeds first. Then add cumin seeds, and saute it well till the cumin seeds turn golden in colour.
  • On the same pan, add two chopped onions and saute it until it becomes translucent.
  • Then add green chillies, ginger-garlic paste, and curry leaves to it and stir it till the raw aroma of the ginger-garlic paste goes away.
  • After that, add all the spices- cumin powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder, goda masala, and the remaining one-fourth of turmeric to it, stir and mix it well.
  • Now, add the tamarind pulp and stir till the raw aroma of tamarind goes away.
  • Add the drained sprouts and potatoes that are already pressure cooked and some water if required, salt and sugar or jaggery.
  • Leave the gas on low flame for 10 minutes and stir occasionally, and lastly, garnish it with the coriander leaves.
  • Assembling Part of Misal Pav
  • First, take out the misal in small bowls and then add the chopped onions and tomatoes over it.
  • Garnish it with coriander leaves and few drops of lemon.
  • Add the farsan or chiwda, or sev on top of it.
  • Now serve the pav buns on a plate along with the well-prepared and well-garnished misal and enjoy.


While you have learned the recipe of homemade misal pav, there are certain things that you need to keep in mind. While following the recipe, you can slightly change the selection of the amount of chilli powder and oil you are adding because the oily and spicer the misal, the tastier is the misal pav. And most importantly, add the sev just before serving, or else it will become soggy and not taste great.
